असंत्यगात् पापकृता मपापां
स्तुल्यो दण्ड: स्पृशते मिश्रभावात् |
शुष्केणार्द्रं दह्यते मिश्रभावात्
तस्मात् पापै स्सह संधिं न कुर्यात् ||

Because of bad society even righteous are
punished along with the sinners. Even wet
things in association with dry things are
burnt when they catch fire. So one should
avoid the company of unrighteous.
So said Vidura.

अर्थाना मीश्वरो य : स्या दिन्द्रियाणा मनीश्वर : |
इन्द्रियाणा मनैश्वर्या दैश्वर्याद् भ्रश्यते हि स : ||

Unless a master of wealth is also
a master of senses, he is bound to
lose all his riches and has a downfall.
So said Vidura.

धर्मार्थौ य : परित्यज्य स्या दिन्द्रियवशानुग : |
श्री प्राणधनदारेभ्य : क्षिप्रं स परिहीयते ||

One who leaves the dharma ( law of rightful living )
and artha ( rightful means of earning money ) and
who is driven by his wild senses , loses the splendor,
riches , wife and even his life . So said Vidura.

येतान्यनिगृहीतानि व्यापादयितु मप्यलं |
अविधेया इवादान्ता हया : पधि कुसारधिं ||

Just as the wild , untrained horses are
capable of destroying the chariot and the
driver too, uncontrolled mind and senses
are capable of destroying a person.
So said Vidura.

रथ : शरीरं पुरुषस्य राजन्नात्मा
नियन्तेन्द्रिया ण्यस्य चाश्वा : |
तै रप्रमत्त : कुशली सदश्वै
र्दानै: सुखं याति रधीव धीर : ||

O King ! The body is the chariot and the
senses the horses that draw the chariot .
A wise person who is alert and controls
these horses skillfully travels
safely and happily . So said Vidura.

आत्मानमेव प्रधमं द्वेष्यरूपेण योजयेत् |
ततो नमात्या नमित्रांश्च न मोघं विजिगीषते ||

One has to treat his mind as his first enemy and
win over it . Then it will not be futile when he tries
to win over his ministers and enemies . So said Vidura.

अविजित्य यधात्मान ममात्यान् विजिगीषते |
अमित्रान् वा जितामात्य : सोनवश : परिहीयते ||

One who desires to win over his ministers ,
without winning over his mind , and to win
over his enemies without winning over his
ministers loses his grip and has a speedy
downfall. So said Vidura.

यो जित: पञ्चवर्गेण सहजेनात्मकर्षिणा |
आपद स्तस्य वर्धन्ते शुक्लपक्ष इवोडुराट् ||

The group of five senses naturally keep pulling
the mind . For a person bound to these senses ,
problems keep increasing like the Moon in Suklapaksha
( increasing half ). So said Vidura.

ऐश्वर्य मदपापिष्टा मता : पानमदादय : |
ऐश्वर्यमदमत्तो हि नापतित्वा विबुध्यते ||

Among all intoxications like riches, authority,
drink etc., riches are the worst as the one
intoxicated with riches comes to his senses
only after his downfall. So said Vidura.

संपन्नतर मेवान्नं दरिद्रा भुञ्जते सदा |
क्षुत् स्वादुताम् जनयति सा चाढ्येषु सुदुर्लभा ||

The poor man’s food is always tasty . Hunger makes
the food tasty . The same hunger is difficult to find
in the case of rich.

प्रायेण श्रीमतां लोके भोक्तुं शक्ति र्न विद्यते |
जीर्णन्त्यपि हि काष्ठानि दरिद्राणां महीपते ||

O King ! Generally the rich do not have the capacity
to digest , whereas the poor can digest even wooden
pieces. So said Vidura.
