शुक्लकृष्णो गती ह्येते जगत : शाश्वते मते |
एकया यात्यनावृत्तिमन्ययावर्तते पुन : ||

The path of light and the path of darkness
available for the world are verily thought to
be both eternal; by the one , the Path of Light,
a man goes to return not; by the other ,
the Path of Darkness, he returns again.

वेदेषु येज्ञेषु तप:सु चैव दानेषु यत् पुण्यफलं प्रदिष्टं |
अनयेति तत्सर्वमिदं विदित्वा योगी परम् स्थानमुपैति चाद्यम् ||

Whatever fruit of merit is declared (in the scriptures)
springs up from the study of the Vedas, the performance
of sacrifices, the practice of austerities and charity – beyond
all these goes the Yogi , having known these (two paths)
attains the Supreme state.

अव्यक्तो अक्षर इतियुक्तस्तमाहु : परमां गतिम् |
यं प्राप्य न निवर्तन्ते तद्धाम परमं मम ||

What is called the Unmanifest and the Imperishable , that ,
they say is the highest goal (path). They who reach It never
again return. That is My highest abode (state).

कविं पुराणमनुशासितारमणोरणीयांसमनुस्मरेद्य : |
सर्वस्य धातारमचिन्त्यरुपमादित्यवर्णं तमस: परस्तात् ||

Whosoever meditates upon the Omniscient , the
Ancient , the Ruler (of the whole world) , the
Minuter than an atom , the supporter of all , of
Form inconceivable, Effulgent like the Sun
and beyond the darkness(of ignorance ).

बहूनां जन्मनामन्ते ज्ञानवान्मां प्रपद्यन्ते |
वासुदेव : सर्वमिति स महात्मा सुदुर्लभ : ||

At the end of many births the wise man comes
to Me , realising that all this is Vasudeva (the
innermost Self ); such a great soul (Mahatma)
is very hard to find.

तेषां ज्ञानी नित्ययुक्त येकभक्तिर्विशिष्यते |
प्रियो हि ज्ञानिनो अत्यर्थमहं स च मम प्रिय : ||

Of them the wise , ever steadfast and devoted to
the One , excels ; for , I am exceedingly dear to the wise ,
and he is dear to Me.

चतुर्विधा भजन्ते मां जना : सुकृतिनो अर्जुन |
आर्तो जिज्ञा सुरर्थार्थी ज्ञानी च भरतर्षभ ||

Four kinds of virtuous men worship Me , O Arjuna,
the distressed , the seeker of (systematised)
knowledge , the seeker of wealth and the wise ,
O Best among Bharatas.

त्रिभिर्गुणमयैर्भावैरिभि : सर्वमिदं जगत् |
मोहितं नाभिजानाति मामेभ्य : परमव्ययम् ||

The whole of this creation is deluded by these objects
evolved from the three modes of Prakriti – Sattva ,Rajas
and Tamas ; that is why the world fails to recognize Me ,
standing apart from these and imperishable.

दैवी ह्येषा गुणमयी मम माया दुरत्यया |
मामेव ये प्रपद्यन्ते मायामेतां तरन्ति ते ||

Verily, this divine illusion of Mine , made up of three Gunas,
is difficult to cross over ; those who take refuge in Me alone,
come to cross over this illusion.

मत्त : परतरं नान्यक्तिञ्चिदस्ति धनञ्जय |
मयि सर्वमिदं प्रोतं सूत्रे मणिगणा इव ||

There is nothing whatsoever higher than Me,
O Dhananjaya. All this is strung in Me , as clusters
of gems on a string.

भूमिरापो अनलो वायु : खं मनो बुद्धिरेव च |
अहंकार इतीयं मे भिन्ना प्रकृतिरष्टधा ||

Earth, water , fire , air , ether, mind ,
intellect , egoism – thus is My Prakruti
divided eight fold.

अपरेयमितस्त्वन्यां प्रकृतिं विद्धि मे पराम् |
जीवभूतां महाबाहो ययेदं धार्यते जगत् ||

This is the inferior (Prakriti ) , different from
it , know thou , O mighty-armed , My higher
Prakriti, the very life element , by which this
world is upheld.

मनुष्याणां सहस्रेषु कश्चिद्यतति सिद्धये |
यततामपि सिद्धनां कश्चिन्मां वेत्ति तत्त्वत : ||

Among thousands of men , one perchance strives,
for perfection; even among those successful strivers,
only one perchance knows Me in essence.
