अक्रोधेन जयेत् क्रोध मसाधुं साधुना जयेत् |
जयेत् कदर्यं दानेन जयेत् सत्येन चानृतं ||

Anger must be conquered by forgiveness , wickedness by honesty,
miserliness by liberality and falsehood by truth. So said Vidura.

येन खटवाम् समारूढ : परितप्येत कर्मणा |
अदा वेव न तत् कुर्या दध्रुवे जीविते सति ||

One should in the very beginning avoid doing
something , the consequences of which may
make one regret later sitting on a bedstead in a
corner room ( or in the end ).
So said Vidura.

द्वेष्यो न साधु र्भवति न मेधावी न पण्डित : |
प्रिये शुभानि कार्याणि द्वेष्ये पापानि चैव ह ||

When one hates a person he never regards him as
honest , intelligent or wise . One attributes everything
good to him that he loves and evil to him that one hates .
So said Vidura.

प्रियो भवति दानेन प्रियवादेन चापर: |
मन्त्रमूलबले नान्यो य : प्रिय : प्रिय एव स : ||

One may become agreeable by gifting , one by pleasant speech ,
another by power of incantation . But who is naturally agreeable ,
always remains so. So said Vidura.

अप्राप्तकालं वचनं बृहस्पति रपि ब्रुवन् |
लभते बुद्ध्यवज्ञान मवामानं च भारत ||

O Bharata , by speaking untimely and out of context words ,
even Brihaspati ( Deva – Guru Jupiter ) himself invites contempt
and dishonour and appears ignorant . So said Vidura.

प्रयोजनेषु ये सक्ता न विशेषेषु भारत |
ता नहं पण्डिता न्मन्ये विशेषे हि प्रसङ्गिन : ||

O Bharata , I consider those as wise men who help
when required and stay away at other times . The rest
who stay more than required just spoil the work. So said
Vidura.

येषु दुष्टेषु दोष : स्या द्योग क्षेमस्य भारत |
सदा प्रसादनं तेषां देवतानां मिवाचरेत् ||

O Bharata, who upon being angry endanger one’s safety and security ,
should be propitiated like the very Gods. So said Vidura.

न च रात्रौ सुखं शेते ससर्प इव वेश्मनि |
य : कोपयति निर्दोषं सदोषो अभ्यन्तरं जनं ||

A person full of faults himself , but who accuses the innocent cannot
sleep peacefully at night , just like a person with a snake in the same
room . So said Vidura.

धृति : शमो दम : शौचं कारुण्यं वा गनिष्टुरा |
मित्राणां चानभिद्रोह : सपैता : समिध : श्रिय : ||

Courage , stable mind , self control , purity ,
kind disposition , pleasant speech and friendliness ,
these seven qualities increase prosperity of a person .
So said Vidura.

अविसंवादको दक्ष : कृतज्ञो मतिमा नृजु : |
अपि संक्षीणकोशो पि लभते परिवारणम् ||

One who does not deceive, who is efficient,
who is loyal and righteous and one with a soft
character , even though he may lose riches ,
never loses the support of associates . So said
Vidura.
